Original and carbon copy correspondence between hafen and Humberd concerning Long's Expedition together with a copy of Dr. Hafen's galley proofs of Capt. John R. Bell's field notes. Contains a copy of Capt. John R. Bell's field notes, May 20 of his (with Dr. Edwin James, Maj. Stephen H. Long, and Mr. Dorans) overland horseback trip from St. Louise, via Franklin and Chariton, to Engineer Cantonment near Council Bluffs. Dr. Humberd's notes to the galley proofs; 8 letters between Hafen (originals wiith signatures) and Humberd (carbon copies); and two large hand drawn maps by Humberd tracing Bell's route through Missouri and Iowa from St. Louis to Fort Atkinson on the Council Bluffs 4-28 May 1820. Humberd writes Hafen a letter of inquiry re the availability of "Broken Hand" and ends up supplying extensive notes and a map.
